Observable Medium Effects For Atmospheric Neutrinos
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss the possibility to observe matter effects in atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The main conclusion is that an impact on the νμ survival probability requires the action of the MSW resonance, which becomes visible for baselines above ∼ 7000 km. The associated muon charge asymmetry carries information on θ13 and the sign of ∆m31. ∗Talk given at the EPS-Conference on HEPP, Budapest (Hungary), July 2001, to be published in the Proceedings.

Atmospheric neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande and parametric resonance in neutrino oscillations
We consider the oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos in the earth in the threeneutrino scheme with a ∆m hierarchy and a small admixture of the electron neutrino in the heavy mass eigenstate characterized by the mixing angle θ13. We show that for ∆m ≃ (0.5− 3)× 10 eV indicated by the Super-Kamiokande data and sin 2θ13 < ∼ 0.2, the oscillations of multi-GeV neutrinos in the subdominant νμ ↔ νe m...
متن کاملThe prompt TeV-PeV atmospheric neutrino window
We discuss the possible existence of an observational window, in the TeVPeV energy range, for the detection of prompt neutrinos from the decay of charmed particles produced in cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere. We calculate the event rates for muon and tau neutrinos of heavy quark, mostly charm, origin. We argue that their prompt fluxes are observable in a kilometer-scale neutrino tel...
متن کاملNeutrinos Are Nearly Dirac Fermions
Neutrino masses and mixings are analyzed in terms of left-handed fields and a 6 × 6 complex symmetric mass matrix M whose singular values are the neutrino masses. An angle xν characterizes the kind of the neutrinos, with xν = 0 for Dirac neutrinos and xν = π/2 for Majorana neutrinos. If xν = 0, then baryonminus-lepton number is conserved. When xν ≈ 0, the six neutrino masses coalesce into three...
متن کاملType II Seesaw and a Gauge Model for the Bimaximal Mixing Explanation of Neutrino Puzzles
We present a gauge model for the bimaximal mixing pattern among the neutrinos that explains both the atmospheric and solar neutrino data via large angle vacuum oscillation among the three known neutrinos. The model does not include righthanded neutrinos but additional Higgs triplets which acquire naturally small vev’s due to the type II seesaw mechanism. A combination of global Le − Lμ − Lτ and...
متن کاملIdentifying the neutrino mass spectrum from the neutrino burst from a supernova
The current data on solar and atmospheric neutrinos admit more than one solutions in terms of the oscillations between three neutrino species. We examine the consequences of these different masses-andmixing schemes for the observable spectra of neutrinos from the burst of a Type II supernova. We point out the distinguishing features of these schemes, and discuss the prospects of identifying the...
